The Former President's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
