French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
