Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of adventurers who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might look out of place, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the foes for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then settled his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their status as important members in the powerful family could assist the team access locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight participants to form the Seekers and Planners tables.

Viewers can expect discovering which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
